Researchers uncover a potential new benefit of maple syrup on liver health
Whether for its unique taste, it versatility when used for cooking or its antioxidant phenolic compounds, maple syrup is a local product that is greatly appreciated and that never ceases to amaze. Maple syrup has already begun its interesting breakthrough with the international scientific community, and consumers everywhere, especially in Japan, are widely interested in the product. Indeed, the Japanese, always on the lookout for natural foods that play a role in disease prevention, love 100% pure maple syrup from Canada and are particularly interested in its various benefits. Dr. Keiko Abe of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences led a study that showed that maple syrup could promote a healthier liver. The study established that healthy laboratory rats fed a diet in which some of the carbohydrate was replaced with 100% pure maple syrup from Canada yielded significantly better results in liver function tests than the control groups fed a diet with a syrup mix1 containing a similar sugar content as maple syrup but without the beneficial compounds of maple syrup. The results will be published in the November, 2011 issue of “Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry.”

The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers to donate $23,712 to the Sainte-Justine UHC Foundation
For the 6th year running, the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers is continuing with two traditions which it considers very important. The first of these is its annual Christmas can, which features the winning entry of an art contest aimed at children aged between 7 and 12. The can is produced by Sucreries Beaurivage and is sold at all Quebec IGA and IGA extra stores. The second tradition is a donation to the Sainte-Justine UHC Foundation of $1 for every can sold. As a result, this year the Federation is donating $23,712 to the Foundation, which amounts to $8,000 more than last year.

Maple Syrup May Pack Similar Health Benefits to Those Found in Berries, Tea, Red Wine and Flax Seed – This Is Not an April Fool’s Joke
There’s more good news about pure maple syrup. Researchers from the University of Rhode Island (URI) have now identified 54 compounds in Canadian maple syrup, double the amount previously reported, and many with antioxidant properties and potential health benefits. In laboratory studies, they acted as anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory agents. Initial studies also suggest that maple compounds may inhibit enzymes relevant in Type 2 diabetes management.

The Economic Importance of Quebec Maple Production
A recent study conducted by ÉcoRessources Consultants on behalf of the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers (FPAQ) shows that Quebec maple syrup production generates more than 12,000 full time jobs in Canada, representing 1.3% of rural employment. Maple products, which have historically been regarded as artisanal and fringe products, currently generate $610 million in GDP and $186 million in tax revenue. This shows its importance to the economy, and therefore Quebec in general. Quebec produces 94% of Canadian maple production and 77% of global production.
