An average maple syrup harvest for the 2010 season
With an early start to the sugaring season that took some producers by surprise in late February, all signs pointed to a bumper crop of maple syrup in 2010. But the warm weather that hit in early April put a swift end to the run. According to official data published in June and confirmed by the Table filière acéricole du Québec, the Quebec maple syrup crop for 2010 is about average. The 43 million taps managed by Quebec's 7,400 maple businesses yielded a total volume of 88.1 million pounds of sap, less than the exceptional crop of 2009, which had been 109.4 million pounds. The production average in 2010 has been calculated at 2.04 pounds per tap, falling in below the 15-year average of 2.20 pounds per tap.

Recent studies in the US and Canada have shown Canadian maple syrup to contain more than 20 antioxidant compounds which are known to slow cancerous cell growth.
The Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers is pleased to report on two new scientific discoveries which show that Canadian maple syrup can be good for you. These studies build on recent findings on the nutritional value of maple products, which have revealed both the antioxidant properties of maple syrup as well as the discovery of substantial quantities of abscisic acid. Abscisic acid is a phytohormone known to stimulate insulin release through pancreatic cells and to increase sensitivity of fat cells to insulin, which makes it a potent weapon against metabolic syndrome and diabetes.

Collective work continues for the development of the maple industry in 2010
|
Longueuil, March 4th, 2010 – After four difficult springs, the 2009 season will go down as a historic season, with Quebec maple syrup production hitting 109.4 million pounds. Producers have been thrilled with the news, especially after they produced only half of this volume the previous year. Even though it is impossible right now to predict production for the 2010 harvest, the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers has once again increased the quota for all producers to 100% in order to respond to global demand. Furthermore, 300,000 new taps are being utilized for 2010 and 2011, which will add to the current quota of 110 million pounds, a huge difference from the 68 million in 2003.

Substantial quantities of abscisic acid, a phytohormone recognized by the scientific community for its health benefits, are found in maple water and maple syrup
|
Montreal, March 4th, 2010 - Thanks to modern science, the closely guarded secrets of one of our nation’s most distinctive emblems, maple syrup, are now being revealed. It has recently been reported that maple syrup contains polyphenols and shows ORAC values which compare to commonly eaten fruits and vegetables such as broccoli. Now, further research on maple syrup and its original form, maple water, conducted by Dr Yves Desjardins and his colleagues at the Institut des neutraceutiques et des aliments fonctionnels, has revealed that both products contain equally important quantities of terpenes, and in particular, abscisic acid, a phytohormone whose health benefits have only recently been discovered.
